National Crime Victims’ Rights Week

April 23, 2015 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

We are going to embark on an event that very well could have flown under the radar, but will not. The week of 19 April 2015 to 25 April 2015 has been declared “National Crime Victims Rights Week.”  Along with the upcoming “Do the Right Thing” Program, our Pink Badge for Breast Cancer Awareness month, the forthcoming Domestic Violence Awareness month, and our participation in the Special Olympics, the “National Crime Victims Rights” event shall bring attention to the most important, and often most forgotten entity of the crime time line; that being the victim. When I say “forgotten,” I surely do not mean it in the Webster definition sense. Our vigilance, along with that of the District Attorney’s Office, moves heaven and earth to bring quick resolution, by way of arrest and successful prosecution of those who victimize our citizenry.

The victimization does not end when our part concludes. Often times, it never ends for the victims and/or their families. That is why the essence of solidarity is extremely important and needed. The victims ( of any crime) must feel that all of the community stands with them. On Thursday 23 April 2015, we will do just that. We will also march with them and alongside them. The Havelock Police Department’s overall message takes message from its core mission. It is incredibly important that a police department blends and meshes into the community, not merely act in concert with the citizens.

The planning stages are in motion. The tentative schedule is as follows:National Crime Victims' Rights Week

  • 5:00pm –  Meet in parking lot of station (on foot)
  • 5:15pm –  Move out from parking lot onto walking route
  • 5:45pm – First of marchers back at Park
  • 6:15pm –  All of marchers should be back at Park
  • 6:20pm – Opening prayer
  • 6:30pm –  First of speakers to say a few words
  • 7:15pm –  Special prayer for victims
  • 7:30-7:45pm –  Candles lit with moment of silence @ 7:45pm)
  • 8:00pm –  Conclusion (Sunset is 1945 hours on this date)

I hope those who can attend, shall. Bring family if you wish. Let’s make this a very positive memory for those in our community who have been victimized by the scourge of crime. More details shall be disseminated as the gaps are filled in. Nonetheless, the 1700-2000 time frame looks like a lock. We can delay the kick off time for inclement weather if need be, though hiking through the mud is nothing when compared to what the victims and their families have gone through. I am banking on good weather. We can improvise as needed.

David Magnusson, Havelock Police Chief
