The Board of Adjustment is a “quasi-judicial” administrative body (board) that operates on a level between enforcement officials (building inspector, zoning administrator, etc.) and the court system. This board is tasked with hearing appeals of an administrator’s interpretation of an adopted ordinance, providing an interpretation of the Code of Ordinances when disputed between officials and the general public, authorizing Variances or modifications to the Code of Ordinances upon appeal in specific cases, and granting or denying Special Exception permits based on specific criteria being met. All Board of Adjustment decisions are subject to review by Craven County Superior Court
